Locating The Lancaster Gallows

One of the most frequent questions that comes up in online local history groups and in our museums is ‘where exactly were the Lancaster gallows?’ There has been much speculation over the years- were they at the appropriately named Golgotha, the highest point of Williamson Park, on Highfield recreation grounds or even at the crossroad of Quernmore and Wyresdale Roads? The suggestions are many but until now, the answer has evaded us. Using original maps and overlays and taking umpteen measurements, coupled with historic sources, I have hopefully, finally, cleared up the mystery of where the Lancaster Moor gallows actually were.
