Biography: Betty, a single woman from Manchester, was convicted of house-breaking from the home of Abraham Sharp was sent to Millbank jail in London her accomplice, Jane, received a one year jail sentence. Betty had been born in Liverpool and was described whilst at Millbank as married, 5ft 3 1/2 with brown hair, a fair complexion and blue eyes. She had scars about her neck and was noted as being of ‘indifferent character’. Due to the perceived epidemic at Millbank jail during these years, a number of women, including Betty were transferred onto hulks floating at Woolwich (either the Narcissus or the Heroine) in September 1823. Her behaviour was described as very good- both at Millbank and onboard the penitentiary ship. She was pardoned and discharged from Millbank and its prison ship on the 20th March 1824.
