Biography: Mary, along with Ellen Carr had taken in and hidden a stolen silver coffee biggin (a coffee percolator) and other items from the house of Thomas Robinson at Liverpool which had been taken by her sons Joseph and Thomas. Her husband Lewis and another boy, George Carnes were acquitted of the crime. Her sons’ death sentences were commuted to 14 years transportation.
Whilst Ellen was sent to New South Wales, due to her age, Mary was not. She recorded as being in good health and was ‘usefully employed’ as a washerwoman in jail at Lancaster Castle in 1824. She was recommended for a pardon and released in September 1825.
