Biography: Margaret was the wife of William Stone of Liverpool, she had used the alias Margaret Burgess. Soon after arrival, in December 1814, Margaret married convict John Hurst (ship- Fortune) who was nicknamed ‘General Ludd’ for his role in the Lancashire Luddite riots at Bolton. One of their witnesses was John’s fellow rioter, John Hope.

Both Margaret and John were then sent on to the Derwent, Van Diemen’s Land in July 1815 on the brig Emu as existing servants to Henry Younge; an assistant surgeon at Hobart’s early hospital who had a terrible reputation and who was sacked for incompetency in 1818.

Margaret received her certificate of freedom in 1820 and the couple then began making their plans for returning home- they advertised in the Hobart newspaper for claims to be settled as they were leaving the colony, sold their house on the corner of Elizabeth and Bathurst Streets and they sailed on the 18th September 1821 on the ship- Mary sailing back to Liverpool via Mauritius and Brazil. They arrived back at Liverpool on the 6th March 1822.
