Biography: Ann was the wife of James Smith of Ashton Under Lyne. She had been convicted of croft breaking there (stealing from a cloth bleaching ground) belonging to John Lowe and Peter and John Brookes. After a long five years, Ann left Lancaster Castle for Preston’s House Of Correction on 20th January 1818 as demolition work was beginning on the dungeon tower where female convicts awaiting transportation were kept. There is no mention of Ann receiving a pardon and she most likely saw out her conviction at Preston, being released in 1820.
