Biography: Alice, a single woman from Manchester had already served jail sentences in 1814 and 1815 before she was convicted of stealing a watch from T. Ellis in 1818. Unusual for a female convict, Alice was literate; Mr Higgin, the governor of Lancaster Castle recorded that she had written a letter on behalf of another female prisoner who was trying to communicate with a John Holt over the walls. Alice was transferred to Preston House of Correction on the 20th January 1818 as demolition work was beginning on the dungeon tower where female convicts awaiting transportation were kept. She received a pardon whilst at Preston in November 1820 and was freed.
