Biography: Margaret paid and put off a forged £1 note to William Birkett at Liverpool. She was married with a child, though her husband, Richard had also been transported on the Maria in 1820. It is likely she had been hoping for her and their child to be sent to Van Diemen’s Land to join them. Instead she was sent to Millbank Penitentiary in London on the 30th November 1821. There, she was described as a servant, 5ft 1.5 inches tall, dark hair, dark complexion, green eyes and a Catholic. Whilst at Millbank, Margaret was pardoned and discharged on the 1st May 1824. She may never have known that her husband remarried another Lancastrian convict, Mary Hill in the October of that year.
