Biography: Sarah had stolen three dresses and other items belonging to a J Williamson. Whilst in jail, she was described as having been born at Stockport and she had a pale complexion, light grey eyes, brown hair, a large smallpox mark on her left cheek and was a widow with a 15 month old child and had already been in the New Bailey jail for 12 months for stealing clothing before.
Sarah has a blank convict record suggesting no further crimes and there is no mention of her child suggesting the baby did not travel with her. She married George Aitchison (ship- Hibernia) at Hobart in June 1828 and in 1830 this was followed by the birth of a son, also George. By this time they were running the York Inn at Oatlands. Sadly just two years later in January 1832 Sarah died and was buried under a large memorial stone ‘the beloved wife of George Aitchison’ at Oatlands General (Old Anglican) Cemetery. Whilst George senior eventually sailed for Melbourne, George junior carried on as an innkeeper at Oatlands.
