Biography: Along with Eliza Thompson (also on Competitor) and their ‘husbands’ (Adam Simpson & John Jones- both on ship- Albion), they were part of a sophisticated operation where the men burgled and stole from a jewellery shop at Manchester, stealing over £400 of jewellery, the women moved the stolen goods to lodgings in Liverpool and transported them to London.
Transported with Eliza, Ann suffered from flu onboard ship, she was bled and given antimony and a sweating medication. She was described as being ‘from London, married and reads and writes, a Catholic. Husband is Adam Simpson convicted and expected in the Albion. 5’1″, fair complexion, brown hair. hazel eyes’.
Ann was assigned to Judge James Dowling (as was her husband) and she had several trips to the female factory, being given up by her master and also at Maitland for drunkenness. Adam was tried by Judge Dowling, their employer in a theft case in 1832 and he personally interverned with the guilty verdict, trying to persuade the jury otherwise, still he received a seven year sentence to Moreton Bay.
Ann received a ticket of leave in 1838 and a certificate of freedom in January 1843. At this time, her description was still similar as on arrival though it was noted she had a ‘R’ tattooed on the top of her right arm and she was the wife of Aaron (sic) Simpson.
