Biography: Born at New Bird Street, Liverpool, 3rd Jan 1797, Jane Jones alias Lin(d)beck married Swedish sailor Charles Linbeck in January 1815 in Chester. She said she was born at Liverpool and was 24 years of age. She had gone of a spree of thefts and stolen in separate instances (some of which in the company of Catherine Forshaw and Ann Wright) from Edward Ashcroft, John Mackay, William Omer Ivester, James Youds and John Spencer. She was described as 5ft 2, with a sallow complexion, grey eyes, brown hair and a long face. She travelled with two children, a daughter about seven and a ten month old son who had been born at Grafton Street, where Jane and Charles lived at the time of her arrest.

In 1822, Jane and her children were in the female factory. Her husband Charles was also later transported (ship- Sesostris) in 1825 for cow stealing and they reunited in 1826 whilst Jane was working for a Mrs Shelly at Parramatta. Jane got her certificate of freedom in November 1827 and at this time Charles was assigned to work for her, finally allowing the family to fully reunite and they went on to have two further children and lived a long life together. Her 1827 description was slightly updated to say she was slightly pockpitted, though with a fair complexion and had a small wart on her forehead. The family can be seen together on the 1828 census. During they 1830s, they began acquiring land at Wentworth Woodhouse’s in Parramatta. By 1841, the family had moved to Goulburn and were now grandparents, their eldest daughter’s baby living with them.

Charles died in 1856 at Braidwood and tragically one year later in August 1857, after visiting his grave there, Jane and her children were travelling back when she fell from the dray and was crushed by the wheel, she was buried with Charles at Braidwood Cemetery the same day. A plaque was erected over their shared grave in 2007 which states they now have over 700 direct descendants.
