Biography: Mary had stolen a pocket-book from Edward Cane at Manchester. She was put onboard ship on the 17th March.

Immediately after arriving, Mary was transferred to the Elizabeth Henrietta and was sent to Port Dalrymple at Van Diemen’s Land. In 1820 Mary got a ticket of leave and was living at Jericho. She was recorded as a servant to James Williams in 1825 (her common law husband) who she had two children with, Henry in 1821 and James in 1826. Her record was very quiet and she got her certificate of freedom in 1825 though she was charged with stealing and branding 18 cattle in 1827, a charge that was soon dismissed.

James died in 1827 and by 1830, Mary was living with a different man, David Barber (ship- Guildford) at Constitution Hill. Her son Henry broke into, stole and destroyed the property of William Christopher (whom the children called Black Bill; he was a native of St Lucia), living nearby and Mary and David who clearly wanted rid of her wayward child said “take the boy and lag [transport] him” when confronted by the victim. After initial discussions were had about putting him in an orphan school, he was sent to a convict reformatory on Maria Island.

After David’s death in 1844 Mary eventually married John Dain (ship- Theresa) in 1851. Mary passed away the following year in 1852, aged around 54 as a result of drowning in a flood on the Jordan River.
