Biography: Alice was part of a gang of women including Mary Lyons who accosted William Ratcliffe, a visitor to Manchester, in Back Piccadilly St. They begged him for money for a drink and upon being given too little robbed him of what was in his pockets; bills of exchange for over £100 and a knife. Alice was seized by William who was then rescued by the other women and two men who then knocked William down. She was soon caught by the watchmen and was seen talking to Mary. At the trial an administrative error meant that the indictment only described her crime as theft, instead of theft from the person- if it had have been, the judge said she would have received a life sentence.
Alice was born in Manchester and described as being 5ft 2 with a pale complexion, brown eyes, brown hair, pitted with smallpox. She was an unmarried factory worker and unusually could both read and write. She had tattoos on both arms with the initials ‘AK+WH’ and ‘JC+MR’. She was sent from Lancaster Castle to Millbank jail in London from where she was pardoned and discharged 6th November 1829.
