Biography: Mary, the wife of John Chadderton, originally from Coventry, stole various articles from the house of Elizabeth Rowse at Manchester. She had her death sentence reprieved which was unusually turned to a 7 year, not life sentence. Mary had an illegitimate daughter whilst locked in Lancaster Castle who was baptised at St Mary’s (Priory) Church whom she travelled with. She was meant to be sent on the Second Fleet but ended up on the third along with Martha Barnett.
She very soon remarried a fellow convict William Adams, having three children with him and living together along with her earlier daughter until his death in 1798. The next decade was spent travelling between Norfolk Island then Port Dalrymple, accompanying soldiers. Mary got her certificate of freedom in 1811 and she then married a soldier William Baker in 1814, living together for ten years until his death and finally the same year, remarried an ex soldier and First Fleeter, Benjamin Cusley. She died in 1834, aged around 76 and is buried at St Matthews, Windsor.
