Biography: Mary was a married woman of Crompton, near Rochdale and had been born at Halifax. Her husband was James Buckley who was also transported earlier the same year on the Morley. Like Mary Howarth, her friend and neighbour, who she was convicted alongside and transported with, she had either turned to crime to survive or as was quite common, did it in order to ‘join’ her husband. She was put on board ship on the 17th March. She travelled with their four children; one of whom (20 month old Mary) was vaccinated onboard and later had stomach pains and head aches. Mary suffered gripes onboard and was given opium and peppermint. The couple’s oldest son Abraham, would live with his grandparents and later joined them in 1840 as a free settler.
Mary and her children were all sent to the female factory on arrival though soon after, Mary and her husband James reunited and stayed together. They had a further 5 children in the colony at Parramatta. She died at aged 67 in 1853.
