Biography: Ellen had used a forged one pound note to William Orton at Liverpool. Her age is uncertain- the Assize calendar of prisoners lists her as 45, the indents as 30.

After arrival, she was sent on to Hobart, Van Diemen’s Land on the Princess Charlotte.

In the first years she was employed by a C. Connelly in Hobart town and in 1823 was working for a Mrs (?)Horny at Pitt Water. Numerous times between 1829 and 1832, Ellen was reprimanded and sent to the lowest classes of the House of Correction, once for 6 days on bread and water only for being absent, idleness, insolence to her mistress and one one occasion using the most ‘infamous and abominable language’. Despite this, she still received her certificate of freedom in 1833.

It isn’t certain that this is ‘our’ Ellen, but a 60 year old Ellen Barrett, housekeeper, died at Hobart from dysentery in March 1845.
