Biography: Maria was born at Northwich and was described as having ‘a fresh complexion, 5ft 5, brown eyes, dark brown hair and her arms crooked. Her husband (Alexander Allanson) lives at Liverpool, has not lived with him for five years’. She could read and write and was a seamstress by trade. She had already been 12 months in the New Bailey jail when she stole clothing, belonging to L King and Jane Fanny at Salford.

The indent on Maria is very faded but could be that she had two children, one (over 8) was left with her husband in Liverpool, the other 36 months, came with her. Maria was assigned to Mrs. Underwood in Sydney on arrival and in 1827, was refused permission to marry a Richard Morris, on account of still having a husband. She appears on the census in the female factory at Parramatta in 1828. She was sent to Newcastle at some time before October 1831 as at that time she was being transferred to the female factory 3rd class for a month, under the name of Maria Albion or Allison. However, she still received her certificate of freedom in May 1832.
