Biography: Hannah had stolen two bonnets. Born at Salford, she had already been imprisoned twice before. She was described as having a very fair complexion with grey eyes, sandy hair, a large scar over her left eyebrow, another across her nose and another long scar on her chin. She had been a factory worker. Her younger sister Eliza received two years imprisonment for the same crime but escaped transportation.

Hannah married baker Richard Ralph (also Rolfe), ship- Mariner, the year of arrival and they lived at Cambridge St, Sydney. However, she did not get off to a good start; Hannah and a Jane New were caught shoplifting haberdashery and children’s footwear from shops in Sydney in August of 1828 with the items being hidden at Hannah’s house and had two further years added to her sentence as well as being sent to the female factory for six months in consequence.

In 1834 Hannah was sent to the 3rd class of the female factory for ten days but managed to have this conviction overturned by the Governor and was released as her seven years (plus two) were up. At this time she was described as 5ft 1 1/2, stout, ruddy faced, light brown hair and light hazel eyes.

There is a possible death record for a Hannah Ralph, aged 27 who died within St James’ parish, Sydney in 1835.
