Biography: Elizabeth was a single woman of Bolton and had been convicted alongside Catherine Woods for theft. She was put on board the Maria on 17/3/1818. The ship’s surgeon writes that she caught a cold onboard and was given magnesium sulphate. Later, she suffered with gripes and was given rhubarb tincture. Following that she also suffered a swelling of the breast.
Initially assigned as a servant, Elizabeth was sent to Newcastle on the ship ‘Mermaid’ for the remainder of her sentence in July 1821 for running away from the female factory but received her certificate of freedom in 1824, she was then aged 23, 5ft 1 with brown hair, hazel eyes and was a cotton weaver by trade. She returned to Sydney some time between 1825 and 28 as in 1828, Elizabeth was recorded as a lodger on Gloucester Street in Sydney.
